Skebo is now training its staff to identify and respond to suspected domestic violence. The initiative, titled "Dare to Care!", aims to provide employees with clear tools on how to react to warning signs when they are in tenants' homes. According to BRÅ's statistics from 2023, the home is still one of the most common places for exposure to violence.
- Our caretakers and technicians work daily in people's homes. If something doesn't feel right, it's important that they know what they can do," says Lisa Nilsson, sustainability developer at Skebo.
All employees who meet tenants have completed a digital training, and on May 13, the entire staff gathered for a lecture day with Elin Pettersson, violence prevention coordinator at Skellefteå municipality, Åsa Östergård and Therese Lundberg from the Center against Violence, and Eva Öström from the police.
Elin Pettersson emphasizes the importance of more actors taking responsibility:
- The home is a place where few have insight. Property companies like Skebo can play a crucial role by acting on what they see and hear. Moreover, there is always a risk that employees themselves are affected by violence, which is why employer responsibility is important," she says.
The effort provides concrete examples of how to interpret signals and what to do when something feels wrong. It can involve disturbances, unusual silence, or visible damage in the home. But even small actions like saying hello or asking how someone is can make a difference.
- We want it to be natural to express concerns with a colleague. Everyone should know that it's okay to care," says Lisa Nilsson.
The theme "Dare to Care" is also highlighted at Skebo's Feedback Meetings, and informational material in stairwells shows which signs to be aware of and how to act as a neighbor.
It's about both colleagues and neighbors feeling okay to react to concerns and getting tools on how to act.
- A generally tougher social climate requires us to strengthen our employees' knowledge, and together we can contribute to a better living environment for our tenants. This is part of our social responsibility," says Lisa Nilsson.
- It's not about being sure of what you've seen, but about reacting when something feels wrong. That's when we can make a difference," says Lisa.
